PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate)

Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) is a semi-crystalline, thermoplastic, saturated polyester that is mainly used for highly stressed technical parts in various industrial sectors.

This material is available with the following modifications: injection and extrusion types, unreinforced, glass-fiber reinforced, glass bead filled, mineral filled, flame retardant, and elastomer modified. Special grades have been approved for products that will come into contact with food items.

Additional blends – PBT/ABS, PBT/ASA, PBT/PC, PBT/PET, PBT/SAN, PBT/TPEE

Properties:
  • High stiffness and good mechanical properties
  • Very good dimensional stability under warm temperature conditions
  • Low water absorption
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Excellent weather resistance
  • Excellent thermal resistance

The main areas of application are automotive, household electronics and electrical industries.

PBT shows resistance against many solvents, including alcohols, ether, esters, higher aliphatic esters, aliphatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, fats, oils and even fuels, such as brake fluids and transformer oils.

Due to the fact that the polyesters are sensitive to hydrolysis (alkaline hydrolysis), the continuous use of PBT in water or in aqueous solvents with temperatures higher than 60°C should be avoided. Short-term contact with warm or hot water should, however, not cause any problems.
